CULTURE
On July 20, 1969, Commander Neil Armstrong became the first man on the moon. He said the historic words, "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind." THE GREAT FIRE OF LONDON It occurred from 2nd September to 5th September 1666. The fire destroyed 13,200 houses,87 churches, St Paul's Cathedral and most of the authorities'buildings in the city. The fire started at a bakery on Pudding Lane and spread rapidly. Fires were common in the overcrowded wooden-built city. Houses had open fires,candles and ovens in them and people often stored tar, oil and other flammable materials. American Independence In 1776, the "United Colonies" in America expelled officials from Great Britain, and declared their independence as the USA. The war was the culmination of the political American Revolution when the colonists overthrew British rule. The Treaty of Paris (1783) ended the war and recognised the US as a country in its own right.
