Humour
The United Kingdom is the country where wordplay (joking about word meanings= humor basado en jugar con los significados de las palabras ; also called PUN) is the most popular type of joke.

Examples:
1- Do you have any grandchildren?
No, all my children are just ordinary.

2- Why did the bus stop?
Because it saw the zebra crossing.

Taxi drivers in London


All licensed taxi drivers in London must pass a series of tests called "The Knowledge". This proves that thay know the names and locations of 25,000 streets in and around Central London. They also need to know places of interest and important landmarks in the area as hospitals, theatres, hotels and train stations. Candidates for a licence drive around London evrydady for several hours. It can take a whole year to prepare for the exams.

Health issues

For several years now, many hospitals around the world have brought in hospital clowns to try and relieve ('aliviar') the mood of tension and drama that often accompanies a hospital stay. Research has shown that laughter can help patients recover more quickly. Some hospital clowns are volunteers, others are employed by the hospital or institution.

ESO 3. CULTURE. BRITISH AUTHORS.

H.G.Wells (1866-1946)

He was an English author best known for his science fiction novels such as The Time Machine, War of the Worlds and The Invisible Man. His later novels became increasingly political and so his earlier novels are more widely read.









Agatha Christie (1890-1976)

She was an English crime fiction writer. She is remembered for writing 66 mystery novels, particularly those featuring the detectives Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple. She is often referred to as as the Queen of Crime and has been called the best selling writer of books of all time. Her stage play, The Mousetrap, holds the record for the longest run ever in London.









Charles Dickens (1812-1870)

He was an English novelist generally considered the greatest of the Victorian era. Dickens' works are characterised by attacks on social evils, injustice and hypocrisy. His books first appeared in serialised form in newspapers and other publications. Some of his most famous books are David Copperfield, Great Expectations and Oliver Twist.
During his lifetime Dickens' works enjoyed unprecedented popularity and fame, but it was in the twentieth century that his literary genius was fully recognized by critics and scholars. His novels and short stories continue to enjoy an enduring popularity among the general reading public.


William Shakespeare (1564- 1616)
Although he is widely regarded as the greatest writer of the English language, very little is known about Shakespeare. He invented over 1700 common words and many of the most used expressions in the English language. He was born and buried in Stratford-upon-Avon.He married Anne Hathaway and they had two girls and a boy, but the boy died. His body of works is considered the greatest in history of English literature.
Some of his most important plays are:
Othello, Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, Julius Caesar, King Lear, The Tempest, The Merchant of Venice (some are comedies, others are tragedies) He wrote 37 plays.
He also wrote 154 sonnets.
